Nike has appointed Kristin Bauer \u2014 a former Foot Locker supply-chain leader \u2014 as Chief Operating Officer of Converse, the heritage brand that has now posted thirteen straight quarters of revenue decline. The move lands as the industry openly debates what Converse is for, and who should run it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to an internal memo viewed by Bloomberg and signed by Converse CEO Aaron Cain, Bauer joins as COO on 14 September and will report to Nike’s overall COO, Venky Alagirisamy. Her r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is squarely operational: she spent nearly three years as Chief Supply Chain Officer at Foot Locker, the retailer now owned by Dick’s Sporting Goods, until this April, and previously held supply-chain and logistics roles at TJX Cos. and Ulta Beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The appointment is telling. Converse’s trouble is fundamentally a demand and relevance problem \u2014 revenue fell 31% on a reported basis and 32% currency-neutral in its latest full-year results, with declines across every region. But putting a supply-chain operator in the COO seat signals a bet that tighter operations, inventory discipline and cleaner execution can stabilise the brand while creative leadership works on desirability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bauer’s Foot Locker tenure is also symbolically neat. Foot Locker and Converse have long been intertwined through retail distribution; a leader who knows both the brand and its most important wholesale partner from the inside may help mend a commercial relationship that matters enormously to Converse’s reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Converse news arrived in the same week Nike named Jane Ewing as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, effective 7 September. Ewing spent nearly 14 years at Walmart, most recently as interim CEO of Sam’s Club in China, and fills a role Nike had eliminated eight months earlier. Taken together, the two hires show a company rebuilding its operating and commercial bench at speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Converse, the stakes are existential but not hopeless. The brand’s cultural equity \u2014 Chuck Taylor, music, skate, subculture \u2014 remains potent. What it has lacked is a consistent product narrative and operational sharpness to convert nostalgia into recurring sales. A COO focused on flow, fill rates and speed could free creative teams to take bigger swings without the business buckling underneath them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Converse is a stress test for a broader question facing heritage sneaker brands: can operational excellence buy time for a relevance reset? Bauer’s mandate will be to make the machine run lean and responsive while the brand searches for its next chapter. If she succeeds, Converse could be the comeback story of Nike’s next fiscal year. If not, thirteen quarters of decline may stretch further still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Either way, the signal from Nike is that Converse is worth fixing, not fading \u2014 and that the fix starts on the operating floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
