On 4 September 2026, the European Footwear Confederation (CEC) announced it had welcomed two new associate members into its network: Trade Partners Sweden and the CAST Trade Platform for the Footwear, Sports & Fashion Industry in the Netherlands. The move is more than an administrative update — it reflects a deliberate strategy to knit the continent’s fragmented footwear ecosystem more tightly together at a moment when the pressures on it are multiplying.

A broader tent

The CEC’s decision to admit the two organisations follows a structural change made at the start of 2026, when the confederation voted to broaden its membership beyond traditional manufacturer associations. Technology centres, expert groups, distributors, retailers and other key figures can now join. Trade Partners Sweden and CAST fit squarely into that widened definition.

With more than 110 years of history, Trade Partners Sweden represents commercial agents, distributors and suppliers, and operates the Stockholm Fashion District, which includes the Stockholm Shoe House. The group also coordinates the Swedish Shoe Environmental Initiative (SSEI), a programme built to help the footwear industry navigate sustainability demands and the relentless churn of EU regulatory development.

CAST, meanwhile, is a business platform serving the Netherlands and the wider Benelux region. It connects more than 500 brands and retailers and runs initiatives such as the PREVIEW trade shows, the BrandPortal and product data standardisation projects — all aimed at supporting members’ digitalisation, sustainability and compliance with evolving European legislation.

“Collaboration is more important than ever”

Carmen Arias, CEC’s Secretary General, framed the expansion in blunt terms. “At a time of growing political and economic uncertainty, collaboration across the European footwear ecosystem is more important than ever,” she said. She pointed to what she called interconnected challenges: weaker consumer demand, rising costs, geopolitical instability, and an increasingly complex regulatory environment as the industry tries to transition toward a more circular and sustainable economy.

Her argument is that no single company — however large — can solve these problems alone. By bringing together manufacturers, brands, technology centres, experts, distributors and retailers, the sector can share knowledge, identify common solutions and ensure the footwear ecosystem’s expertise is heard at the European level. The CEC’s stated ambition is to strengthen those connections and help build a competitive, innovative, sustainable and genuinely European footwear sector.

Why it matters now

The timing is telling. European footwear has spent the past two years absorbing overlapping shocks: energy cost volatility, shifting supply chains, the slow rollout of digital product passports, and a consumer that has grown cautious about discretionary spend. Against that backdrop, trade associations that once defended narrow national or sub-sector interests are increasingly pooling resources.

For smaller players especially, associate membership offers a seat at the table where the rules of the next decade are being written. The SSEI initiative in Sweden and CAST’s data-standardisation work in the Benelux are concrete examples of how cross-border cooperation translates into practical help — whether that is interpreting a new EU directive or building the digital infrastructure that compliance now demands.

The bigger picture

The CEC’s expansion is a quiet but meaningful signal. As the footwear value chain becomes more regulated, more digital and more sustainability-driven, the organisations that thrive will be those that connect rather than isolate. Welcoming Trade Partners Sweden and CAST is a step toward an ecosystem where a tannery in one country, a retailer in another and a technology centre in a third can operate from the same playbook.

For an industry built on craftsmanship and local identity, that balance — global coordination without losing regional character — will define the next chapter.

Source: World Footwear — https://www.worldfootwear.com/news/cec-welcomes-two-new-associate-members/11742.html

European footwear confederation CEC admits Trade Partners Sweden and CAST, widening its network as the sector faces cost, regulatory and demand pressures today.

[4
1484,1097,618,932,38,1485,160,1483
post-2913","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-cast","tag-cec","tag-eu-regulation","tag-european-footwear-confederation","tag-footwear-industry","tag-footwear-supply-chain","tag-sustainability","tag-trade-partners-sweden
["GET
