The 52nd edition of Simac Tanning Tech, the international trade show for machinery, technologies and solutions for the footwear, leather goods and tanning industries, closed with a 25% jump in attendance, confirming the event’s role as a strategic platform for a sector investing in automation and digitalisation. Held at Fiera Milano Rho from 15 to 17 September 2026, the fair drew more than 8,800 visitors \u2014 around half of them from outside Italy and representing more than 20 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Organised by Assomac, the show “further solidified its role as a strategic international platform,” according to Mauro Bergozza, President of Assomac. “Internationalisation is a key driver for growth in the technology sector and for our companies’ ability to establish a presence in increasingly diverse markets,” he said, adding that the fair “does not merely bring together operators and technologies from around the world in Milan, but creates the conditions for building lasting industrial relationships.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A centrepiece of this edition was a three-year Memorandum of Understanding between Assomac and ACCAL, the Latin American Footwear Chambers Association, to strengthen industrial and technological cooperation between Italy and Latin America. With the region producing an estimated 1.5 billion pairs of shoes in 2024 \u2014 about 6% of global output \u2014 the agreement focuses on connecting local demand for modernisation and digitalisation, including automated cutting and stitching, CAD\/CAM, traceability and production management systems, with Italian expertise. Activities begin at ANPIC in Le\u00f3n, Mexico, in October, followed by initiatives in Colombia and Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fair also deepened ties with Egypt’s leather and footwear industry, hosting a delegation linked to the Robbiki Leather City project. Assomac and the Leather Technology Training Centre signed an agreement to develop joint training and research programmes, with discussion of a dedicated footwear production area at Robbiki in a later phase. Bergozza tied these moves together with the new EU\u2013Mercosur trade framework, noting that Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Colombia are “strategic partners given their size and technological needs.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking to 2027, the association signalled a particular focus on India, another strategic market for supply-chain development. The message from Milan was consistent: the technology side of the leather and footwear world is betting that the next wave of growth will come from emerging manufacturing hubs, and that Italian machinery makers intend to be the ones equipping it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
