Few footwear stories are as improbable as Crocs. A foam clog born from a boating shoe, dismissed by fashion gatekeepers, and ridiculed for its “cheap” look, it became one of the best-selling shoes on the planet and the largest IPO in footwear history. Now co-founder George “Boe” Boedecker Jr. has written the story down \u2014 warts, wild rides and all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His new book, Croc: How I Invented the World’s Most Popular Shoe, Became a Massive Success, and Nearly Destroyed Myself \u2014 in 15 Easy Lessons<\/em>, is out this week from HarperCollins Leadership. In a candid conversation with Footwear Plus, Boedecker reflects on why he wrote it, what will surprise readers, and what Crocs’ lasting mark on fashion really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I’ve been here in Nashville for years now, making music with great musicians,” Boedecker says. Distance from the founding, from Boulder, and from his “colourful” youth finally made him ready to look back and “make sense of it.” The aim, he says, was simply to tell his own story \u2014 one he’s “pretty sure is not like that of most CEOs. Or most Earthlings, period.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n What will shock readers? How fast the success came, and “what an absolute gas it was marketing the shoes” \u2014 tooling around on the boat, in the yellow cars, with friends, meeting strangers, and ignoring the people who hated them. He recalls encounters with those open enough to see “this was a revolution, and they were going to be foot soldiers in it for the next 20 years. And counting.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Boedecker’s core thesis is disarmingly simple: “You can’t fool people. Or you can’t fool their feet.” Whatever tastemakers thought of the look and composition, no one could deny how comfortable Crocs were \u2014 easy to wear, durable, lightweight, inexpensive. “No one ever got poor selling stuff that was comfortable,” he writes. He couldn’t care less what critics thought, and notes they’re probably wearing Crocs at home when no one’s looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Asked about Crocs’ lasting mark, Boedecker points to “The Era of the Individual” \u2014 a culture where everyone wants to be seen as unique. With their bright colours, the famous 13 holes, the Jibbitz personalisation, and partnerships with brands eager to associate with them, Crocs were “made for this period in history.” The haters, he argues, are vastly outnumbered and out-passioned by the lovers \u2014 and if you truly hate them, “go design your own shoe that sells billions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a defiant, self-aware coda from a man who built a category-defying brand and lived to write about it. For the footwear industry, Boedecker’s story is a useful corrective to elite taste: comfort, accessibility and a little irreverence can beat conventional fashion wisdom.
