On October 1, the world’s largest sportswear group confirmed a sweeping new operating model under its multi-year “Pace” programme — one that will reduce its global workforce, redraw its geographic map, and rebuild its supply chain from the ground up. For an industry that has watched the Swoosh stumble through a painful recovery, the message is clear: the turnaround is not yet finished, and the people who built the brand will pay part of the price.

A leaner, more regional Nike

In a note to employees, CEO Eliot Hill was candid about the uncertainty. Decisions on exactly which roles will be affected, he said, “will begin in calendar year 2027 and beyond,” and he warned staff not to trust media speculation about headcount or locations because “we do not yet know the number of roles or specific locations of positions.” It is a carefully worded admission that the painful details are still being calculated.

Structurally, Nike will reorganise into three geographic regions: the Americas (merging North and Latin America), APGC (Asia Pacific and Greater China), and EMEA, which continues largely as it operates today. Alongside that, the company is reworking its global supply chain with new technology and a more flexible cost base, betting that speed and service — not just scale — will win back shoppers.

One concrete signal of where Nike sees growth is the establishment of a new campus in Bengaluru, India — a market the company describes as both an important growth opportunity and a manufacturing hub. It is a telling move: as Western demand softens, the centre of gravity in the global footwear economy keeps drifting east.

The numbers behind the reset

The cuts do not come from a position of strength. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Nike reported revenue of $11.2 billion — down 4% on a reported basis and 5% on a currency-neutral basis, dragged down by declines in Greater China and EMEA. That is the kind of quarter that forces hard choices, and Hill’s “Pace” programme is explicitly designed to make them.

Nike expects the programme to generate roughly $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through fiscal 2031. But restructuring is never free: the company also expects about $1 billion in pre-tax charges, mostly tied to employee severance and related costs. In other words, Nike is spending a billion dollars to save a couple of billion — a bet that a slimmer, nimbler organisation can out-run a sluggish one.

What it means for the industry

For leather and footwear suppliers, the implications are double-edged. On one hand, a more regional and technology-driven Nike supply chain could open doors for agile manufacturers closer to end markets. On the other, a company squeezing costs and headcount is a company squeezing its vendors too. Suppliers should expect tighter margins, faster lead-time demands, and a sharper focus on proven, data-backed performance.

There is also a human story here that the industry too often glosses over. Every “operating model” is a thousands-strong community of designers, marketers, and factory partners whose stability is rewritten by a single memo. Nike has been here before — repeated layoff rounds have become a pattern rather than an exception. The question investors should ask is not just whether “Pace” works, but whether yet another restructuring is the sign of a company rediscovering discipline or one still searching for a footing it lost.

Nike’s reinvention will be one of the defining storylines of 2027. If the Bengaluru campus and the regional model deliver growth, the cuts will look like necessary medicine. If they do not, the Swoosh may find that you cannot cost-cut your way back to cultural relevance.

Source: World Footwear — “Nike to reduce workforce as part of a new operating model” (October 7, 2026)

Nike will cut jobs under its ‘Pace’ operating model, reorganising into three regions and opening a Bengaluru campus as Q1 FY27 revenue fell 4% to $11.2B.

[4
1624,38,480,1623,672,675,1622
post-3018","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-bengaluru-campus","tag-footwear-industry","tag-nike","tag-pace-programme","tag-sportswear","tag-supply-chain","tag-workforce-cuts
["GET
