According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the country shipped 3.14 million pairs of footwear in July–August 2026, down 10.5% from 3.51 million pairs a year earlier, while export value eased 1.2% to 33.21 million U.S. dollars from 33.60 million.

Look closer, though, and the picture is more encouraging than the headline suggests. Leather footwear — the higher-value core of the category — moved against the grain. Export quantity rose 8% to 1.67 million pairs from 1.55 million, and value increased 1.24% to 27.61 million dollars from 27.27 million. In other words, the products that command better prices and anchor Pakistan’s positioning as a serious leather producer are gaining ground even as total volumes fall.

The drag came almost entirely from the “other footwear” bucket. That category’s export quantity dropped 26.2% to 1.43 million pairs from 1.93 million, and value declined 16.7% to 4.92 million dollars from 5.90 million. Synthetic and non-leather lines, in other words, are the weak spot — exactly the segment most exposed to low-cost competition and price pressure from elsewhere in Asia.

There were bright spots in the smaller categories. Canvas footwear exports jumped 66.5% in quantity to 31,635 pairs, with value up 58.1% to 680,000 dollars from 430,000. It is a small absolute number, but the trajectory is striking and suggests niche demand — school, casual, and promotional footwear — is finding buyers.

The August monthly figures were more mixed. Total footwear exports in August 2026 came in at 16.02 million dollars, virtually unchanged from 16.02 million a year earlier, even as quantity fell 25% to 1.40 million pairs from 1.87 million. Within that, leather footwear value rose 3.8% year-on-year to 13.01 million dollars, though quantity dipped 1.1% to 770,812 pairs — a sign that exporters are protecting price even as they ship slightly fewer units. Canvas footwear again shone, with August volume up 257.21% and value up 269.05% against August 2025. The “other footwear” category, by contrast, fell sharply in August: 623,289 pairs worth 2.72 million dollars, down 42.91% in volume and 20.21% in value.

The takeaway is that Pakistan’s footwear export performance in the opening two months was propped up by leather, while weaker shipments of other footwear weighed on both total quantity and value. That is not a bad place to be. A structural tilt toward leather — which carries stronger brand perception, better margins, and more durable demand in Western markets — is broadly the direction the industry has wanted to move for years.

The challenge is scale and stability. Volatility in raw-material supply, energy costs, and exchange rates can swing monthly figures sharply, as the August numbers show. And the “other footwear” decline is a reminder that Pakistan cannot easily win a race to the bottom on cheap synthetic lines against larger low-cost producers. The realistic path is to lean into leather, defend price, and grow the canvas and niche segments where differentiation is possible.

For buyers and observers, the data reinforces a simple point: Pakistan’s footwear story in 2026–27 will be written by its tanneries and leather exporters. If leather keeps climbing while the low-value segments contract, the country’s export mix quietly improves — even when the topline looks flat.

Source: Leather News (leathernews.org) — “Pakistan Footwear Exports Fall 1.2% to $33.2 Million in First Two Months of FY2026-27” (Sep 30, 2026).

Pakistan footwear exports fell 1.2% to $33.2 million in July-August 2026, but leather footwear volume rose by 8% as the segment defied the broader downturn.

[4
1670,564,1437,16,1663,1669
post-3045","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-export-data","tag-footwear-trade","tag-leather-footwear","tag-leather-industry","tag-leather-news","tag-pakistan-footwear-exports
["GET
