New York City retailer Tip Top Shoes, German comfort brand Mephisto, and fashion arbiter Mister Mort — the creative alter ego of Big Apple street-style photographer Mordechai Rubinstein — recently unveiled an ultra-limited-edition collaboration that is equal parts art object and marketing tease.

The shoe in question is a vibrantly coloured take on the Mephisto Match, rendered in full-grain tumbled leather in bright pink and red, with a white and grey sole, white or green laces (both included, for wearer’s choice), and a custom woven tongue label. Just 15 pairs exist, distributed during an exclusive friends-and-family drop for influencers close to the project at Tip Top Shoes’ Upper West Side location — giving the family-friendly neighbourhood retailer an entrée into the hype-driven “if you know, you know” niche more commonly associated with its sister store, West NYC.

The project is a teaser for a larger forthcoming release: a brown Match inspired by a mountaineering boot, born from a bigger Mister Mort and Tip Top Shoes × Mephisto collaboration. “Mordechai and I spent a lot of time nerding out about vintage men’s footwear and hiking apparel,” said Adir Landes, brand director for Tip Top Shoes and West NYC. “We felt that the hiking boot is the perfect mutual ground for Tip Top Shoes and Mister Mort. It’s utilitarian in a city where walking is the number one mode of transportation.”

That “Range Rover for your feet” philosophy captures the appeal: overbuilt for the city, but handsome and supremely comfortable. Landes says the candy-coloured red and pink Matches were chosen deliberately as a statement-making promotion, knowing full well they would never hit retail. “We wanted to make something as loud as possible — a Mephisto in a colourway you likely won’t see ranged in their men’s line again.” The design was honed over coffee on a Lafayette Street bench, approved in person at Paris Fashion Week in June, and produced in France.

For Mephisto, a brand built on comfort and craft rather than clout, the collaboration is a clever way to speak to a younger, style-obsessed audience without diluting its core identity. Limited, gift-only product generates conversation and social proof far beyond its tiny production run — exactly the kind of earned attention money can’t easily buy.

For Tip Top Shoes, the drop reinforces its dual identity: a trusted neighbourhood comfort destination by day, and a conduit to streetwear credibility by night. And for Mister Mort, it is another chapter in a career spent translating downtown New York sensibility into desirable objects.

The lesson for the broader footwear trade is simple but powerful: in a crowded market, a tiny, deliberately un-buyable product can do more for a brand’s cultural capital than a full seasonal lineup. The 15 pairs are already gone — but the brown mountaineering Match they were teasing is the one worth waiting for.

Source: Footwear Plus Magazine, October 15, 2026.

Tip Top Shoes, Mephisto and Mister Mort dropped a 15-pair limited Mephisto Match collab as a teaser for a larger mountaineering boot release coming this autumn.

[4
927,554,1738,700,1737,921,1736
post-3074","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-footwear-collaboration","tag-leather-shoes","tag-limited-edition","tag-mephisto","tag-mister-mort","tag-streetwear","tag-tip-top-shoes
["GET
