Kering, the French luxury group behind Gucci, Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta, reported third-quarter revenue of €3.35 billion — essentially flat when reported, with a favourable currency effect absorbing a 1% like-for-like decline. But behind the headline stability lies a more uncomfortable story: a group in the middle of a deliberate, and still unfinished, restructuring of its leather and fashion houses.

For the nine months to the end of September, Kering generated €10.5 billion in revenue, down 2% on a reported basis and flat on a comparable basis. The group used the results to signal something concrete. It is accelerating the pruning of its physical footprint, having closed 105 stores in the period — already exceeding its annual target of 100 — and now aims to shut at least 125 by the end of the year. After closing 75 stores in 2023, Kering is clearly betting that fewer, better-located doors will protect margins better than a sprawling network built for a different era of luxury demand.

Gucci remains the weight

The pressure is concentrated in Kering’s largest house. The Fashion & Leather Goods division posted third-quarter revenue of €2.7 billion, down 1% on a reported basis and 3% on a comparable basis. Strip out Gucci, and the picture brightens: retail sales across the rest of the segment rose 2%, driven by continued momentum at Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta and Brioni. Gucci itself reported revenue of €1.3 billion, down 6% on a comparable basis, with retail sales falling 9%. North America proved the most resilient market, while weaker footfall hit the Asia-Pacific region, and mainland China in particular, hardest.

Kering’s management framed the quarter as the “anticipated second-half phasing and a more difficult comparison base, compounded by softer macroeconomic trends.” Lower store traffic was the main challenge, though conversion rates and average spending held up, supported by stronger product execution and client engagement. In other words, the people still walking in are spending, but fewer of them are walking in.

Reading it against the peers

Context matters. Where Hermès continues to defy the slowdown and LVMH’s leather goods segment also softened, Kering’s problem is more acute because Gucci’s brand heat has cooled faster than its rivals’. That gap is what makes Kering’s restructuring feel urgent rather than routine. Investors have grown impatient with turnaround timelines, and every quarter of flat or negative comparable growth adds pressure on creative and commercial leadership to deliver a convincing new chapter.

A disciplined, selective strategy

Kering is not alone in facing a tougher comparison base and softer Asian demand, but its scale makes the recalibration more visible. The decision to close stores ahead of schedule signals confidence that discipline, not volume, will defend profitability through the downturn. Wholesale and other revenues across the group actually rose 3% in the quarter, a reminder that selective distribution, rather than blanket expansion, is back in favour. There is an emotional undercurrent here too: Gucci, for years the engine of Kering’s valuation, is now the drag that forces uncomfortable questions about brand cycles in luxury.

What to watch

For leather goods suppliers, tanneries and manufacturers in Kering’s value chain, the takeaway is nuanced. A leaner store network and a pivot toward direct-to-consumer strength imply steadier, higher-quality demand from the houses that are winning, but continued caution from the one that is not. The luxury leather cycle is not broken; it is simply selective, and selectivity is the new normal. The coming quarters will show whether the non-Gucci houses can keep compounding — and whether Gucci can find a collection that reconnects with shoppers before patience runs out.

The investor lens

Kering’s shares have long traded at a discount to peers precisely because of Gucci’s uncertainty, and management’s candour about store closures suggests it would rather take the pain now than stretch out the discomfort. The risk is that pruning alone cannot fix a brand narrative; product and creative direction must follow the cost discipline. For now, the group’s relative resilience outside Gucci offers a cushion, but the market will ultimately judge the turnaround on whether comparable sales stabilise before the store programme ends. The coming holiday quarter will be the first real test of whether the leaner network and stronger client engagement can convert into growth — and whether Gucci, the house that defined Kering’s last decade, can write a credible next chapter.

Source: World Footwear

Kering’s Q3 2026 revenue held flat at €3.35bn, but Gucci’s 6% slide and 105 store closures reveal a luxury leather group resetting its market footing this year.

[4
680,1006,679,676,994,1031,1776
post-3101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-bottega-veneta","tag-fashion-and-leather-goods","tag-gucci","tag-kering","tag-luxury-earnings","tag-saint-laurent","tag-store-closures
["GET
