That Is Not a Contradiction.

LINEAPELLE 108 attracted 22,800 professional visitors from 114 countries between 15 and 17 September 2026, with international attendance accounting for 43% of the total. Overall footfall was 10% higher than the September 2025 edition. The three-day exhibition at Fiera Milano Rho featured 1,029 exhibitors and more than 17,000 buyers.

Set those numbers against the industry’s actual condition and something uncomfortable emerges. Italian leather industry revenue fell 6.4% in the first half of 2026, according to figures published around the same fair. Europe’s footwear and leather goods sectors have been sliding for consecutive quarters. And yet the trade fair grew.

It is not a paradox; it is what consolidation looks like from the inside.

The fair is absorbing the market

When an industry contracts, its meeting points contract faster than its output. Buyers stop attending three fairs and attend one. Exhibitors stop taking stands in four cities and take one, larger, in Milan. The survivors concentrate.

LINEAPELLE’s own numbers show this mechanism at work. Compared with the February 2026 edition, exhibitor numbers increased 21% while attendance rose 35%. LINEAPELLE attributes the February shortfall to logistical disruption caused by the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics events running simultaneously at the Rho exhibition district — a fair explanation, and a reminder that a February edition hit by transport chaos is not a clean baseline.

But the September comparison is the revealing one. A 10% attendance gain in a year when the underlying industry shrank 6.4% in revenue means the fair is capturing a larger share of a smaller market. That is good news for LINEAPELLE and bad news for every smaller regional event that used to split the traffic.

What 43% international actually tells you

Just under half of visitors came from outside Italy. For a fair historically anchored in Italian tanning, that figure is the most strategically important number in the release.

It says that despite everything — tariff uncertainty, freight costs, the collapse of several European fashion brands’ order books — Milan remains the place where a Turkish tanner, a Brazilian finisher, a Chinese buyer and a German brand’s sourcing director all end up in the same hall in the same week. No digital platform has replaced that, and the attempts have been expensive failures.

It also says something about the buyer mix. A fair with 43% international attendance and 17,000 buyers is not a domestic showcase. It is an export platform, and the exhibitors paying for stands are paying for access to buyers they cannot reach through any other channel in three days.

The market backdrop the fair is operating in

LINEAPELLE’s own framing is honest: companies continue to deal with geopolitical tensions and changing strategies among fashion and luxury brands, and the environment requires them to remain responsive, explore new markets and adapt.

That is diplomatic language for genuinely difficult conditions. Luxury houses have been resetting production volumes downward and rethinking their materials mix. Mid-market brands face margin pressure from both directions. And the geopolitical layer — tariffs, rules of origin, the EU deforestation regulation, chemical restrictions — has moved from background noise to board agenda in under two years.

In that environment, a fair’s value shifts. It is no longer primarily about writing orders. It is about reading the market: which materials are being specified, which compliance questions buyers actually ask, which competitors have disappeared. A 10% attendance increase suggests the industry agrees — people come to Milan to find out what is happening, not just to buy.

The exhibitor number deserves scrutiny

1,029 exhibitors is a substantial figure and a 21% increase on February. But it should be read with care. In a contracting industry, exhibitor counts can rise for reasons unconnected to demand: smaller stands, shared pavilions, subsidised participation through national trade bodies, and consolidation of adjacent material categories into the leather hall.

The more useful question is composition. A fair that grows by adding synthetic and bio-based material exhibitors while leather tanners hold steady is telling you where the industry’s centre of gravity is heading. LINEAPELLE has deliberately positioned itself as a leather and related materials event — commercially shrewd, and strategically risky for leather’s own identity.

That tension is worth naming. The fair that exists to promote leather now hosts a growing roster of materials designed to replace it. The upside is relevance and traffic. The downside is that a buyer walking the halls can no longer assume the hall is leather.

The February date is the next test

The next edition runs from 23 to 25 February 2027 at Fiera Milano Rho, focused on the Summer 2028 season, with no Olympics to blame if the numbers disappoint.

February has historically been the weaker edition — smaller, more Italian, more focused on sampling than on contract negotiation. If the September surge is genuinely about consolidation rather than a calendar accident, February should hold up against the disrupted 2026 baseline rather than reverting to type.

The takeaway for tanners

Trade fair statistics are usually the least interesting thing in this industry’s news cycle. This set is worth more, because it quantifies a shift that matters to anyone selling leather.

The buying function is consolidating into fewer, larger, more international events. That means fewer chances per year to be seen, and higher stakes when you are. It means the quality of a stand, the clarity of a material story and the ability to answer a compliance question in the first thirty seconds matter more than they did when there were six fairs instead of three.

And it means the industry’s health cannot be read from a fair’s attendance growth. Milan grew because the market shrank around it. Both things are true, and only one of them is good news.

Source: Leather News (leathernews.org), reporting LINEAPELLE 108 attendance figures

LINEAPELLE 108 drew 22,800 professional visitors from 114 countries, up 10%, as the Milan fair consolidates a shrinking Italian leather market into one hall.

[4
1186,266,1891,837,1151,685,1890,907
post-3174","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-fiera-milano-rho","tag-italian-leather","tag-leather-buyers","tag-leather-exhibition","tag-leather-trade-fair","tag-lineapelle","tag-milan-leather-fair","tag-tanning-industry
["GET
