Bids barely crossed $150,000 against expectations of more than $500,000. For the emerging field of cultured materials, the hammer coming down without a sale may prove more instructive than any successful launch — because it exposes, in a single afternoon, the gap between scientific theatre and luxury credibility.

The bag had everything a publicity machine could want. It was unveiled at the Artis Zoo Museum in Amsterdam beside a large dinosaur skeleton. Its origin story traced to a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton discovered in Montana some twenty years ago, where paleontologist Mary Higby Schweitzer’s claimed discovery of soft tissue remains and protein fragments — a finding that remains deeply controversial among scientists — provided the raw material for the project’s narrative.

The Science, Stripped of the Story

According to Thomas Mitchell and Ernst Wolvetang of The Organoid Company, researchers used AI to reconstruct a complete protein sequence from the ancient fragments — and based that reconstruction largely on chicken proteins, because birds are the closest living relatives of dinosaurs. That detail is where the story begins to wobble.

Jan Dekker, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Turin specialising in paleoproteomics, was blunt. Dinosaur proteins, he noted, are highly controversial: proteins are unlikely to survive more than 20 million years even in exceptional conditions, while the T. rex disappeared roughly 66 million years ago. Even granting the original fragments to the dinosaur, about 90% of the final protein sequence would derive from chicken. His verdict: “What they have done is create synthetic collagen using an AI model trained on a variety of different species, mainly chicken. A very interesting development in itself, but it is not a dinosaur. In fact, it’s more chicken than anything else.”

Why the Auction Flopped

Luxury buyers are not stupid, and they are particularly unsentimental about provenance claims that do not survive scrutiny. The auction house Drouot reported bids “far below expectations.” Bas Korsten of advertising agency VML — one of the project’s producers — explained that the team chose the T. rex concept because dinosaurs fascinate people worldwide. That is precisely the problem: the concept was engineered for fascination, not for the durable value story that six-figure luxury purchases require.

Consider what a $500,000 handbag buyer is actually purchasing: permanence, scarcity, craft, and a story that holds up at dinner parties under hostile questioning. “AI-reconstructed synthetic collagen, mostly chicken-derived, marketed with a contested paleontology claim” does not clear that bar. The project’s own producers acknowledged that lab-grown leather has struggled to gain acceptance in the luxury market — an honest admission, and an overdue one.

The Real Lesson for Materials Innovation

None of this means cultured leather is dead. The underlying technology — growing collagen through engineered organisms — is genuinely promising, and serious players are pursuing it with sustainability metrics rather than dinosaur gimmicks. What failed in Paris was a marketing strategy: the belief that a spectacular story could substitute for demonstrated quality and verifiable provenance.

There is a broader warning here for the traditional leather industry, too. The ridicule that followed the T. rex project should not be mistaken for vindication of business as usual. The fact that a synthetic-collagen bag reached a Drouot auction at all shows how far materials innovation has advanced. Leather’s response should be confidence built on what it actually has — a 66-million-year-old raw material’s real successor: traceable, repairable, and beautiful for decades — rather than complacency.

The dinosaurs, it turns out, were the wrong metaphor. In materials innovation as in evolution, survival does not go to the loudest story, but to the best adapted.

Source: Leather News / Drouot auction reporting

A lab-grown T. rex leather handbag failed to sell at Drouot Paris, exposing the gap between scientific spectacle and the provenance luxury buyers truly pay for.

[4
1988,1989,432,1990,1991,1993,1992,1987
post-3208","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-industry-news","tag-cultured-collagen","tag-drouot-auction","tag-lab-grown-leather","tag-luxury-handbag","tag-materials-innovation","tag-paleoproteomics","tag-synthetic-leather","tag-t-rex-leather
["GET
