PFAS Rules and Green Chemistry Take Center Stage at Freiberg Leather Days

The second day of the 2026 Freiberg Leather Days conference zeroed in on the practical questions that will shape leather manufacturing over the next decade. Held in Münster, Germany, the event brought together researchers, chemical suppliers, and tanners to discuss PFAS regulation, sustainable processing technologies, chemical compliance, digitalization, traceability, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in production.

PFAS was arguably the dominant theme. These per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called “forever chemicals,” have become a regulatory flashpoint across Europe and North America. Used historically for water and stain resistance in leather finishes, PFAS are now targeted for restriction because of their persistence in the environment and potential health effects. For tanners and chemical companies, the shift is forcing a rethink of formulations that have been standard for years.

The discussions at Freiberg did not treat PFAS as a narrow compliance issue. They framed it as part of a broader transformation in how leather is processed. Sustainable processing methods, cleaner chemistry, and waste reduction are no longer niche topics. They are moving to the center of product development and procurement decisions.

Chemical compliance was another major thread. European tanners operate under some of the strictest chemical regulations in the world, including REACH restrictions, biocide rules, and emerging limits on substances like bisphenols. Keeping up with these requirements demands close collaboration between tanners, chemical suppliers, and testing laboratories. The conference provided a forum for that collaboration.

Digitalization and traceability also featured prominently. As brands and regulators demand more information about where materials come from and how they are processed, the industry is investing in systems that can capture and verify data across the supply chain. Artificial intelligence, meanwhile, is beginning to find applications in quality control, process optimization, and predictive maintenance.

What made the second day distinctive was its practical orientation. This was not a theoretical debate about the future of leather. It was a working session on the technologies and processes that companies need to adopt now. Attendees left with specific regulatory updates, technical insights, and a clearer sense of where the industry is heading.

The event also reflected a shift in how the industry presents itself. For years, leather’s environmental story was largely defensive, focused on rebutting criticism from animal welfare and vegan leather advocates. At Freiberg, the conversation was more forward-looking. The emphasis was on innovation, measurement, and continuous improvement.

That shift is necessary. The leather industry faces growing competition from synthetic materials marketed as sustainable, as well as from regulators who are tightening environmental and chemical rules. To remain competitive, leather needs to demonstrate not just tradition and quality but also measurable environmental progress.

The Freiberg Leather Days have become an important venue for that demonstration. By bringing together the technical community around shared challenges, the conference helps align the industry’s innovation agenda. Day two of the 2026 edition showed that the agenda is increasingly focused on the science of cleaner, smarter, more transparent production.
