Scottish Leather Group Turns Tannery Waste Into Fire-Retardant Foam

The leather industry has spent years defending itself against the charge that it generates waste. Scottish Leather Group is flipping the script — by turning one of its own byproducts into a high-value material that global manufacturers actually want to buy.

The Glasgow-based company has developed BioPRO Foam, a collagen-based seating foam produced from a byproduct of leather manufacturing. The material is naturally fire-retardant and free from chemicals including melamine and PFAS — the so-called “forever chemicals” now facing tightening regulation across Europe and North America. The technology has been secured with a global patent, and the company says early customer discussions under non-disclosure agreements drew a strong response, with aviation clients already signed up.

From Byproduct to Breakthrough

Speaking to The Scotsman, chief executive Nicholas Muirhead explained that the idea emerged after the business discovered collagen’s foaming properties while exploring new uses for leather-industry byproducts. “We established that collagen had foaming properties, and it felt like a natural link to explore,” he said. “The foam we created was naturally fire retardant and allowed us to remove nasty chemicals like melamine and PFAS from traditional foams.”

That is a genuinely significant claim. Conventional seating foams rely on added flame retardants and chemical treatments to meet fire-safety standards; replacing them with an inherently fire-resistant, bio-based material attacks both a performance and a regulatory problem at once. For airlines and carmakers — sectors where fire safety is non-negotiable and chemical restrictions are tightening — the appeal is obvious.

A Vertically Integrated Advantage

Scottish Leather Group has reopened a production site in the Glasgow area to manufacture the material, building on a model that sets it apart. The family-owned business operates its own tannery, cutting facility and foam production site, letting it control the entire process from raw hide to finished foam. That integration is rare and strategically powerful: it guarantees supply of the collagen feedstock and keeps the intellectual property inside one company.

The group’s roots in the leather trade run eight generations deep. Today it supplies leather to automotive marques including Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin and McLaren, as well as airlines such as Emirates, British Airways and Singapore Airlines, and runs manufacturing facilities in China and Mexico. North America is currently its strongest export market — Muirhead credited, in part, U.S. tariff policies that encourage manufacturers to source more products domestically.

The Bigger Picture

BioPRO Foam is more than a clever product. It is a template for how the leather sector can reframe its sustainability story. Rather than treating collagen-rich waste streams as a disposal problem, Scottish Leather Group is monetising them into a premium, patented material with clear environmental and performance advantages. In an era when brands are under pressure to prove circularity, this is the kind of innovation that turns a defensive narrative into a commercial one.

The stance here is clear: the future of leather’s relevance depends on exactly this kind of value-added thinking — capturing the utility locked in every part of the hide and the process around it. If BioPRO Foam scales as its early traction suggests, it could give the industry a powerful new answer to the question of what “waste” really means.
