Spain’s Fashion Retail Sales Flatline in June as Discount Season Disappoints

Spanish fashion retail sales barely moved in June — and the reasons behind the stagnation say as much about margin as they do about demand. According to the latest barometer from Acotex, the Business Association of Textile, Accessories and Leather Commerce, sales of fashion products in June rose just 0.3% year-on-year, while falling 5.4% compared with the previous month.

The figures paint a picture of an industry treading water. Fashion retail — spanning both physical stores and online — managed only a marginal annual gain, even as the year-to-date cumulative figure held at a modest +2.2%. Crucially, June marked the fourth consecutive month of positive territory, so the sector is not in retreat. But the pace of growth has clearly cooled, and the shape of the slowdown reveals the underlying dynamic.

The culprit is, paradoxically, a good regular season. Retailers told Acotex that while they had expected a somewhat stronger sales period during the summer rebates, strong selling earlier in the season left less stock on the shelves and encouraged shallower discounts than in previous years. The result: shoppers hunting for bargains during the sales may not have found their desired item — because it had already sold at full price — nor the deep markdowns they had come to expect.

That is, on balance, a healthy sign. Acotex itself flags a genuine positive: a large share of stock was sold without discounts or with lower discounts, which helps recover margin that has been severely compressed by rising costs. In an inflationary environment where input and operating expenses have squeezed profitability, protecting price integrity is a quiet victory for the trade.

The tension is between volume and value. Flat unit sales are easier to stomach when those sales carry fuller margins. A retailer that sells less but earns more per item is in better shape than one chasing turnover through relentless promotion. June’s data suggests Spanish fashion retail is, cautiously, leaning toward the former. For the footwear and leather goods folded into Acotex’s remit, that discipline matters: it means fewer clearance-driven losses and a firmer base from which to negotiate with suppliers.

Still, the softening month-on-month trend is a reminder that the recovery remains fragile. Four months of gains is a foundation, not a fortress. With consumer confidence in Europe still patchy and discretionary spending under pressure, the sector cannot assume the momentum will hold into the autumn. The back-to-school period will be an early test of whether shoppers reopen their wallets or keep prioritising essentials.

For an industry that has spent years absorbing cost shocks, the June print is a prompt to enter the back half of the year with eyes open — celebrating four months in the black, while preparing for the possibility that the next quarter tests the resilience behind the numbers.
