Eighty Years On, UNIC Charts a New Era for Italian Leather

When UNIC — the Italian Tanners’ Association — was founded on April 9, 1946, Italy was rebuilding from the rubble of the Second World War and the global leather trade was a very different business. Eighty years later, UNIC convened its 80th Annual General Meeting and elected a new president, marking not just a generational change at the top of the organisation but a strategic reset for an industry confronting a once-in-a-generation set of pressures.

A new mandate, a familiar crisis

The new UNIC leadership inherits a sector that remains the global benchmark for premium leather but faces a worrying combination of slow luxury demand, European regulatory pressure, and competition from lower-cost origins. Italian tanneries have long survived on quality, technical sophistication, and proximity to the fashion capitals. None of those advantages is enough on its own in 2026.

The new president’s mandate, members say, is to defend that premium positioning while modernising the industry’s commercial offer. That is a delicate balance. Lean too hard into tradition and UNIC risks looking like a museum. Lean too hard into innovation and the artisan base that defines Italian leather will push back.

RADICI and the storytelling imperative

To mark its 80th anniversary, UNIC launched RADICI, a publishing project that traces the association’s role in the development of Italian tanning from 1946 to the present. It is more than a vanity project. In a global marketplace where brands and consumers are increasingly sceptical about where their materials come from, RADICI is an attempt to anchor Italian leather in a verifiable story of craft, science, and continuity.

That matters because the alternative narrative — leather as a polluting legacy industry — is winning the cultural argument in too many European capitals. UNIC’s bet is that an honest, technically rigorous history can inoculate Italian leather against the worst impulses of the next wave of regulation.

Brussels on the horizon

The AGM took place against a backdrop of intensifying European policy activity. EUDR, the deforestation regulation, is reshaping how tanneries source raw hides. REACH is tightening chemical controls. The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive is putting fresh pressure on supply-chain transparency. And a new generation of green claims rules is making it harder to use words like “natural” and “sustainable” without hard data behind them.

UNIC’s response, articulated through Cotance at the European level, has been to engage rather than resist. That is the right call. Italian tanneries have the technical depth to comply with stringent rules; they need a unified voice in Brussels to make sure those rules are practical, science-based, and not weaponised by competitors.

What the new president must deliver

Three priorities will define whether the new UNIC leadership succeeds. First, a coherent sustainability narrative that holds up under media and regulatory scrutiny. Second, a serious push into automotive and interior segments where Italian leather remains under-represented relative to its technical capabilities. Third, a credible answer to the workforce question — Italian tanneries are full of grey hair and short of the next generation.

None of these challenges is novel. All of them are now urgent. The 80th anniversary is a fitting moment to acknowledge that the next eighty years will not look like the last eighty. Italian leather is not a heritage brand to be preserved in amber; it is a working industry that must earn its premium every quarter.

The view from the new leadership

The message from the new UNIC president was characteristically Italian: a blend of pride, pragmatism, and a refusal to apologise for the industry’s size. Italian leather is small in volume. It is enormous in influence. The job of the next presidential term is to keep that influence intact long enough for the next generation of tanners to take over.

If the 80th AGM is any indication, that work has already begun.
