Japan’s JLIA Takes Its Eco-Leather Credentials to the Sustainable Leather Forum in Paris

Japan’s JLIA Takes Its Eco-Leather Credentials to the Sustainable Leather Forum in Paris

Japan’s leather industry is preparing to tell its sustainability story to a European audience. The Japan Leather and Leather Goods Industries Association (JLIA) has confirmed it will exhibit at the Sustainable Leather Forum in Paris on September 7, 2026, using the appearance to promote two of its flagship certification programmes internationally: the JLIA Sustainable Certification and the Japan Eco Leather Certification.

The Sustainable Leather Forum has become one of Europe’s most closely watched gatherings on responsible leather. It brings together brands, manufacturers, and industry experts from around the world to debate sustainable manufacturing and supply-chain practice, and it carries particular weight in a market where environmental claims are subject to intense scrutiny. For JLIA, exhibiting there is a calculated step in a longer campaign to raise the global profile of Japanese leather’s environmental credentials.

At the forum, JLIA will showcase both certifications and explain how the Japanese industry is approaching sustainability. The JLIA Sustainable Certification recognises companies that are actively committed — in line with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — to building a sustainable society, economy, and environment. The Japan Eco Leather Certification, meanwhile, certifies leathers that meet the Japan Eco Leather Standard, covering environmental considerations across the full life cycle: manufacturing, transport, sale, consumption, reuse, and disposal.

Both programmes reflect a broader strategic posture. Rather than positioning leather defensively against synthetic alternatives, JLIA is choosing to demonstrate, with documented standards, that responsibly produced leather can meet exacting environmental benchmarks. That message lands differently when delivered in person, at a venue where brands and regulators are actively shaping procurement and labelling rules.

The Paris appearance also fits a pattern of Japanese industry bodies seeking greater international visibility. As global fashion and automotive supply chains tighten their traceability and environmental requirements, certification schemes that are credible, auditable, and internationally legible become commercial assets — not just marketing badges. A tannery or product brand holding Japan Eco Leather certification can point to a recognised standard when responding to downstream customer questionnaires.

JLIA has indicated it will continue raising awareness of both certifications domestically and abroad, framing the effort as a contribution to the sustainable development of the leather industry as a whole. The September 7 forum is a single date on that calendar, but the underlying ambition is persistent: make “Japan Eco Leather” a term that resonates wherever leather sourcing decisions are made.

For international buyers evaluating suppliers, JLIA’s presence in Paris is a reminder that Asian leather-producing nations are not uniform. Japan’s approach — standards-driven, life-cycle-oriented, and increasingly outward-facing — offers a distinct model worth watching as the global regulatory environment for leather continues to tighten.
