UITIC 2027 Heads to Jakarta With a Mandate: Engineer the Future of Footwear

The global footwear industry’s technologists will converge on Jakarta from August 2–4, 2027, as the 23rd UITIC International Congress takes the stage under a theme that could not be more urgent: “Engineering the Future of the Footwear Industry.” Organised with KRISTA Exhibitions and APRISINDO, the event signals where the centre of gravity in footwear manufacturing — and its innovation conversation — is heading.

A Congress with a thesis

UITIC, the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians, exists to connect the engineers, chemists, and production specialists who actually make shoes at scale. The 2027 edition leans hard into transformation: its overarching theme is “Advanced Technologies, Sustainable Manufacturing and Resilience in a Changing Global Landscape.” If that sounds like a mouthful, the subtext is sharper — design and manufacturing are being rewritten by new technology, and companies that do not adapt will be left engineering in the past.

The programme’s particular focus is the growing adoption of new technologies across design and manufacturing, ranging from artificial intelligence and intelligent product design to “physical AI” on the factory floor. For an industry long defined by craft and manual skill, the explicit embrace of physical AI is a notable line in the sand.

Sustainability as a competitive weapon

Beyond the gadgets, UITIC 2027 treats sustainability not as a compliance chore but as a competitive asset. The Congress will explore how environmental performance can differentiate brands and build resilience in an “increasingly complex and unpredictable global environment.” That framing matters: after years of sustainability being a cost centre, the industry is finally learning to sell it.

Resilience and agility round out the trio of organising ideas, a recognition that supply chains built for a stable world are poorly suited to the one we actually live in.

More than talks

UITIC has sketched a programme that blends substance with spectacle: industry and factory visits alongside conference sessions, held in parallel with the ILF (Indo Leather & Footwear Expo) and IGT (Indo Garment & Textile Expo). The popular Innovation Showcase returns, and the agenda features keynote speeches, technical sessions, expert panels, and networking events designed to move ideas off the slide deck and onto the factory floor.

Why Jakarta, why now

Hosting the Congress in Indonesia is itself a statement. Southeast Asia has become indispensable to global footwear production, and Indonesia — with its scale, labour base, and growing domestic market — is a logical next anchor for the industry’s technical community. Pairing UITIC with ILF and IGT creates a rare moment where the people who design the machines meet the people who run them meet the people who buy the output.

For footwear professionals, UITIC 2027 is less a conference than a forecast. The companies that show up, listen, and act on what they learn will be the ones still engineering footwear a decade from now. The ones that skip it may find the future engineered without them.
