IULTCS Opens 2027 Young Leather Scientist Grants — Up to €1,500 for Emerging Researchers

The future of leather science needs funding as much as it needs curiosity, and the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) is putting its money where the industry’s future is. Applications are now open for the 2027 Young Leather Scientist Grants, offering financial support of up to €1,500 to early-career researchers working on leather science, sustainability, and related technologies.

The programme is deliberately inclusive. It is open to students and early-career researchers under the age of 35 who are affiliated with a university or leather school and have the backing of an academic advisor. Applicants must submit unpublished research, and the deadline is 30 November 2026 — a tight but workable window for those assembling a proposal.

What sets these grants apart is their thematic breadth across three distinct research areas. The first, Basic Leather Research, covers collagen, leather chemistry, analytical methods, processing innovations, and preservation — the foundational science that underpins everything from tanning chemistry to hide conservation. The second, named the Prof. Mike Redwood Sustainability and Environmental Research category, focuses on sustainable tanning, environmental technologies, waste management, eco-friendly chemistry, and reducing environmental footprints. The third, Machinery and Digitalization Solutions, targets automation, machinery development, process optimization, analytics, and quality-control technologies.

Selected researchers can receive up to €1,500 in financial support, but the non-monetary benefits may matter even more. The programme offers international visibility, an opportunity to present research at an IULTCS Congress, and direct connections with experts from across the global leather industry. For a young scientist, that combination of cash, stage, and network is often the difference between a promising idea and a career-defining project.

Applications can be submitted by downloading the package and sending it to Dr. Volker Rabe at volker.rabe@tfl.com.

Why does this matter beyond the obvious goodwill? The leather industry faces a relentless innovation burden: it must decarbonise, detoxify, and digitise simultaneously while defending its social licence to operate. That agenda will be delivered by the researchers entering the field today, and they need both resources and a platform. Programmes like this counter the brain-drain risk facing traditional industries, where talented young scientists might otherwise drift toward tech or pharma.

The inclusion of a dedicated sustainability category — honouring the late Prof. Mike Redwood, a tireless advocate for responsible leather — sends a clear message about where the sector’s intellectual energy should flow. Likewise, the digitalization stream acknowledges that the tannery of the future will be instrumented, automated, and data-driven.

For tanneries, suppliers, and brands, supporting (or simply amplifying) such grants is a low-cost investment in the talent pipeline. The 2026 edition named three winners; the 2027 round now invites the next cohort to step forward before November closes.
