APICCAPS Launches “Kindness”: Portugal Bets That Empathy Sells Shoes

In an industry where the loudest marketing usually shouts about price, speed and the next drop, Portugal’s footwear sector has chosen a quieter, riskier note. This month APICCAPS — the Portuguese Footwear, Components and Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association — unveiled “Kindness,” an international communication campaign that puts empathy, sustainability and the people behind the product at the center of the country’s shoe story. It is a deliberate counterpoint to a world, in the association’s own words, “that never seems to stop, not even to catch its breath.”

The move is more than a feel-good slogan. It is a strategic repositioning for a manufacturing base that exports more than 90 percent of what it makes to 174 countries across five continents, generating nearly 1.8 billion euros in export revenue. When your survival depends on foreign shelves, the story you tell about your product matters as much as the product itself. APICCAPS is betting that “quality, authenticity and durability,” paired with a growing commitment to responsible manufacturing, will travel further than discount-driven messaging in mature markets where consumers are increasingly skeptical of fast fashion’s environmental bill.

Portugal is not alone in trying to wrap its footwear in a values story, but it arrives with unusual credibility. The country weathered the offshoring wave that hollowed out much of European shoe production by doubling down on flexibility and high-mix, low-volume manufacturing — the kind of production that mass-market automation struggles to replicate. That industrial flexibility is itself a sustainability argument: shorter supply chains, closer oversight, and the ability to serve European brands without shipping halfway around the world. In a decade when carbon footprints and traceability have become procurement criteria rather than marketing footnotes, that proximity is a quiet advantage that low-cost, long-distance competitors cannot easily copy.

Cláudia Pinto, Communications Director at APICCAPS, frames the campaign around small, daily choices. “Contributing to a better world often begins with the small choices we make every day,” she says, arguing that “doing better is not just about producing better” but about respecting the world around us and understanding that every gesture counts. It is a message designed to land with buyers who are tired of being told to consume more and more quickly.

There is a real industrial logic underneath the soft tone. Portuguese footwear has spent years consolidating a reputation for craftsmanship — expertise passed down through generations, meticulous attention to detail, and a willingness to embrace new materials, technologies and processes. The “Kindness” campaign simply attaches that production reality to a values narrative that resonates in markets from Northern Europe to North America. Rather than competing on cost against low-wage producers, Portugal is competing on conscience: shoes designed to last, made by people who are valued, in a country that takes its environmental commitments seriously.

The campaign’s craft credentials are visible in its execution. Photography by Frederico Martins, styling by Fernando Bastos Pereira and production by Snowberry give “Kindness” a premium, editorial feel, and it was unveiled as part of the official ModaLisboa programme — Portugal’s flagship fashion week. Notably, the initiative is backed by COMPETE 2030, the national competitiveness and innovation framework, underscoring that this is a state-supported push to internationalise the sector, not a one-off branding exercise.

For the broader leather and footwear industry, Portugal’s approach is worth watching. As sustainability scrutiny intensifies — from supply-chain due-diligence laws in the EU to growing consumer wariness of synthetic, disposable alternatives — producers who can credibly tell a story of durability and responsible craft may win the segments that matter most. “Kindness” is, in effect, Portugal’s answer to the question every legacy manufacturer now faces: how do you stay relevant when the cheapest option is always one click away?

For APICCAPS, the wager is that consumers will reward sincerity over spectacle. The risk is that “Kindness” reads as polish rather than policy if the underlying manufacturing claims are not watertight. But the campaign at least moves the conversation beyond price — and in a commodity-prone industry, that is already a competitive edge worth betting on.
