New York’s Hotel Math Broke the Calendar: FSNYE Cancels Its December Market

The Footwear Show New York Expo (FSNYE) has pulled the plug on its planned December 2026 edition, and the reason is refreshingly blunt: New York City hotel rates have simply become unsustainable for the brands that make the show work.

The event was scheduled for 1–3 December at the Park Lane Hotel. In a statement released this week, the FSNYE organisation said room rates for the December 2026 market period had climbed between 47% and 55% compared with previous cycles — a jump steep enough that exhibiting would no longer deliver the return on investment the marketplace was built to provide.

A relationship business, not a real-estate play

Phyllis Rein, President & CEO of Footwear Show New York Expo, was unambiguous about the logic. “Rather than pass these costs on to the brands and companies that participate in FSNYE, we believe postponing the December marketplace is the most responsible decision,” she said. The priority, she stressed, has always been a marketplace where exhibitors see a strong return and buyers can efficiently discover the collections they need. Producing December under current hotel conditions, she argued, would not meet the standards set by earlier events.

That framing matters. Trade shows live and die on a delicate economic balance between exhibitors, buyers and the venues that host them. When the cost of simply putting people in a room spikes by half, the maths collapses for everyone downstream — especially emerging and mid-sized brands for whom a New York booth is a significant bet.

What this says about the trade-show model

FSNYE is a relative newcomer, founded in 2019, and built around an intimate showroom setting where brands and retailers meet face to face. Rein was careful to separate the decision from any existential worry: “This decision only applies to the December event and does not mark the end of FSNYE.” The organisation is already exploring its next marketplace, currently pencilled in for 8–10 June 2027, with details to follow as plans firm up.

The pause is a useful lens on a wider tension in the industry. Physical marketplaces remain valued for relationship-building and discovery that screens cannot replicate — but their viability is hostage to city-level cost structures, convention-hotel dynamics and the post-pandemic repricing of business travel. When a city’s room rates outrun the value a show can deliver, the show adapts, delays, or risks alienating the very exhibitors it depends on.

The bigger picture for buyers and brands

For buyers, the cancellation removes one December touchpoint for spring-summer ordering and reloads weight onto the June 2027 edition and other regional markets. For brands, it is a reminder that the cost of visibility is rising along multiple axes — freight, materials, tariffs and now accommodation — and that show organisers are increasingly willing to protect the experience over the calendar.

FSNYE closed on a note that doubles as its brand promise: “FSNYE was built on relationships, and those relationships remain at the center of everything we do.” In an industry where trust is the real inventory, protecting that relationship — even at the cost of a scheduled event — may prove the more durable move.
