ACLE 2026 Smashes Attendance Records as China’s Leather Industry Bets on ‘Better, Not More’

ACLE 2026 Smashes Attendance Records as China’s Leather Industry Bets on ‘Better, Not More’

The numbers are in, and they are striking. The 26th All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) pulled more than 34,000 visitors through its doors during three days in Shanghai, setting an all-time attendance high for an event that has become the anchor of the Asian leather calendar. For an industry grinding through weak demand, inflation and tariff uncertainty, the turnout reads less like defiance and more like a quiet strategic pivot.

Held from 1 to 3 September at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, ACLE 2026 gathered over 900 exhibitors from more than 30 countries and regions across eight halls. The floor spanned raw hides and skins, semi-finished and finished leather, chemicals, machinery, components, footwear materials and manufacturing technology. According to post-show figures, attendance rose 5.7% compared with the previous edition and a hefty 44.7% against the last pre-pandemic show in 2019. Organisers also reported an average visitor satisfaction score of 9.15 out of 10 — a detail that matters as much as the headcount.

What makes the record notable is the context. China’s leather and footwear complex is not in a buoyant moment. The ACLE report itself flagged a difficult first half of 2026: sales among major tanning companies fell 12.8% year-on-year, while imports of raw hides and skins rose 7% to 749,000 tonnes. In footwear, sales at major companies dropped 6.1%, and output of leather footwear slipped 7.6% to 970 million pairs. Tariffs, geopolitical tension and soft consumer confidence are all weighing on order books.

So why did tens of thousands of buyers and suppliers still show up in force? The answer is in the shift the organisers themselves named. “The market remains challenging, but ACLE 2026 showed an industry continuing to source, invest and adapt,” they said. “The opportunity is increasingly shifting from supplying more to supplying better — with clearer provenance, stronger performance, greater efficiency and a more direct connection to market needs.”

That framing showed up everywhere on the floor. Discussions kept returning to sustainability, traceability and regulatory compliance, alongside technical performance, production efficiency and digitalisation. Artificial intelligence emerged as a genuine theme rather than a buzzword, with several tools demonstrating how AI could support material selection and product development. Equally telling was a subtler signal: suppliers’ development capabilities are becoming a deciding factor in sourcing decisions. Buyers are no longer simply comparing price per square metre; they are evaluating whether a partner can co-develop, document and de-risk a product.

For international exhibitors, the record attendance is a reminder that China remains the world’s largest and most concentrated leather-sourcing marketplace even as its domestic manufacturing contracts. For Chinese tanners and factories, the crowd is a mandate to move up the value chain — to win on provenance, performance and service rather than volume.

The next edition is already dated: Shanghai, 1 to 3 September 2027. If this year’s record is any guide, the conversation will have moved further still — from “can you make it” to “can you prove it, trace it and improve it.” That is the real story behind the 34,000 visitors.
