China’s Leather Garment Exports Jump 41.4% Even as the Wider Leather Sector Slips

China’s leather industry delivered a study in contrasts in the first half of 2026. While the sector’s headline export number drifted lower, one segment — leather garments — roared ahead, posting double-digit growth that few in the industry would have predicted a year ago.

A strong half for leather garments

China’s key leather garment enterprises recorded sales revenue of RMB 2.9 billion (about $433.48 million) between January and June 2026, an increase of 25.5% year on year. The export performance was even more striking: leather garment exports reached $68.68 million, growing 41.4% compared with the same period last year. Imports of leather garments also rose, up 31.3% to $64.76 million.

Leather garments ranked among the strongest-performing segments of China’s leather industry during the first six months of the year — a genuine outlier in an otherwise cautious market.

The broader picture is softer

The garment gain stands in sharp relief against the wider trend. China’s leather industry as a whole — spanning leather, footwear, leather garments, bags and cases — recorded exports worth $40.91 billion in the first half of 2026, a decline of 5.4% year on year. Imports nudged up 4.9% to $7.9 billion over the same period, according to data released by APLF.

So the leather garment segment grew exports by more than 41% at the very moment the total leather complex shrank by more than 5%. That divergence is the story.

Why garments, why now?

Several forces help explain the gap. Leather garments are a higher-value, more design-driven category than commodity leather or basic footwear, and they benefit from brands rebalancing sourcing toward flexible, relatively short-run production. A weaker comparative base from the prior year also flatters the percentage. But the magnitude — a 41.4% jump — points to real demand recovery rather than statistical noise alone.

There is also a structural factor. As China’s footwear exports have faced pressure from shifting global demand and competition, some manufacturing capacity and export energy has rotated toward finished leather apparel, where Chinese factories retain strong upstream integration and speed-to-market advantages.

What it means for the supply chain

For tanneries and leather traders, a thriving garment-export channel is good news for demand of finished and semi-finished leather suited to apparel. It diversifies the customer base beyond footwear, which has borne the brunt of the sector’s recent softness.

For competing manufacturing hubs in Vietnam, India, Bangladesh and beyond, China’s garment rebound is a competitive signal. It suggests the “China plus one” narrative may be more nuanced than assumed: China is not retreating uniformly, but selectively defending and growing the higher-margin, higher-skill corners of the leather value chain.

Reading the tea leaves

The first-half numbers should be read with discipline. A 41.4% leap is unlikely to repeat linearly, and the broader 5.4% export decline is the more representative signal for the industry’s overall health. But the garment surge is a reminder that aggregate statistics can hide pockets of genuine strength.

If the momentum holds into the second half, leather garment exports could become one of the few bright spots in China’s leather trade at a moment when footwear and bags are under pressure. For buyers and suppliers alike, that is where the opportunity — and the competition — will concentrate.
