Split leather is the layer beneath the top layer and lacks an outer layer. It must be coated before use. It feels hard and lacks breathability, and it tends to peel and crack after prolonged use. Many merchants sell it as genuine leather, and those who are not knowledgeable are easily deceived.

How to distinguish between first-layer leather and second-layer leather

The simplest three ways to distinguish are:

1. First, look. First-layer leather has irregular patterns and pores; second-layer leather has uniform patterns, like printing.
2. Second, press. First-layer leather has natural radial lines and rebounds quickly; second-layer leather is hard and rebounds slowly.
3. Third, smell. First-layer leather has a faint leather fragrance; second-layer leather has a gluey or plastic smell.
