Why do some genuine leather bags only sell for a few hundred yuan? The factory director reveals the truth: what you think of as “genuine leather” may be a scam

All labeled as “leather bags”, some sell for two or three hundred, some for two or three thousand, and some even for tens of thousands.
Many people are puzzled: Isn’t it all genuine leather? Why is there such a big price difference?
Today, as a factory director who has been involved in leather goods for 20 years, I’m going to tell you some truths that are rarely spoken in the industry.

What material is used for the “genuine leather bag” priced at a few hundred yuan?
It’s not that cheap products are necessarily bad, but you should be aware that they are likely to use the following materials: stitched leather. A complete piece of cowhide has a limited area. A high-end brand may use several whole pieces of leather to craft a tote bag, selecting only the best parts. However, cheap bags are made by stitching together many small pieces of leather. This saves material, but results in many seams, which are unsightly and prone to fraying.
Scrap leather material refers to the leftover bits and pieces after large factories have cut out large pieces. These scraps are irregular in shape and vary in size, and can only be used for small items or pieced together. The cost is extremely low, but the quality cannot be guaranteed.
Repairing the surface of the leather. The original leather surface has flaws (insect bites, scars, blood vessel patterns). The manufacturer uses a machine to remove a layer of the surface, and then sprays a thick layer of paint to cover it. This kind of leather looks quite smooth when it is first bought, but after a few months of use, the coating wears off, revealing the underlying flaws. It also peels and flakes.
The coating is extremely thick on the split leather. The split leather itself has loose fibers and insufficient strength. The manufacturer just coats it with a thick layer of PU (polyurethane) or PVC, presses on patterns, and passes it off as genuine leather. Essentially, this kind of leather is no longer considered “genuine leather”, but more like “leather + plastic”.
Partial genuine leather. A sneakier way to play: Use genuine leather for the main parts of the bag, and imitation leather for the sides, bottom, and shoulder strap. The label still says “genuine leather,” but only the piece you touch is genuine.
02 What exactly makes a good leather bag expensive?
A leather bag priced at several thousand yuan is expensive for a reason.
It’s made of full-grain leather, the finest layer of cowhide, featuring natural texture, clear pores, and a soft and waxy feel. There’s no need for a thick coating to conceal it; what you feel is the genuine leather texture.
The entire piece of leather is cut. The front and back panels of a bag may come from adjacent parts of the same piece of leather, ensuring consistency in color, texture, and thickness. The resulting bag is seamless, without any patchy appearance.
No repairs, no flaws. During the selection stage of good leather materials, parts with insect bites, scars, or loose grain issues are cut off. We would rather have a higher loss rate than settle for less.
Good hardware and craftsmanship. The hardware of cheap bags fades, turns black, and gets stuck after just a few months of use. The hardware of good bags is made of high-quality copper with multiple layers of electroplating, and remains shiny even after years of use. Wiring, oil edges, lining… every detail involves cost.
03 As an ordinary buyer, how to avoid pitfalls?
You don’t need to become an expert, just remember these three points: Check the label. “Genuine leather” doesn’t necessarily equate to “first-layer leather”. If the label only vaguely states “genuine leather”, make sure to ask: Is it first-layer or second-layer? Is it full-grain or spliced?
Touch the texture. Good first-layer leather feels warm, elastic, and porous. Leather with a thick coating feels smooth, cold, and plastic-like.
Consider the price. For a medium-sized first-layer cowhide bag, the cost of the leather alone is tens or even hundreds of yuan. Adding in the cost of hardware, accessories, labor, factory profits, and brand profits… Do you think it’s possible to sell it for just two or three hundred yuan?
04 Lastly, we at Jialin have been committed to crafting cowhide women’s bags for 20 years, using only full-grain leather, without splicing, using scrap leather, or passing off second-layer leather as first-layer.
It’s not because we “can’t save money”, but because we understand that making quick money is easy, but building long-term reputation can only rely on quality.
Don’t just look at the price when buying a bag. A bag costing a few hundred yuan may seem like a bargain at the time of purchase, but you may regret it after using it for just three months. On the other hand, a bag costing several thousand yuan may feel like a financial sacrifice at the time of purchase, but it will still look good even after being carried for three or five years.
Which one is more cost-effective? You can calculate it yourself.
