JD Sports Strengthens Leadership Team with North America and Group Marketing Appointments
JD Sports has reshaped its leadership team with two senior appointments designed to steady the business as it contends with softer US consumer confidence and a slower quarter for high-heat footwear product. John Mersho becomes President and Chief Executive Officer of the JD fascia in North America, while Mike Grimes takes on the role of Chief Marketing Officer for the JD Group.
Mersho, who has served as Chief Commercial Officer of JD North America since 2025, steps into the new role following the retirement of John Hall after four decades in retail. A member of the family that founded Shoe Palace in 1993, Mersho became that company’s CEO in 2024. In his new position he will focus on strengthening JD’s product offering, improving the omnichannel customer experience, and increasing brand awareness and presence across North America — a market where sales have been pressured by weaker consumer sentiment, a slower quarter for headline sneaker launches, and deferred back-to-school demand.
Grimes, meanwhile, has been appointed CMO of the JD Group after nearly two decades with JD North America, most recently serving as CMO of the North American business. In the expanded role he will oversee the long-term direction of the JD brand globally, maintain consistency across markets while supporting local strategies, and contribute to the customer proposition, own-brand portfolio, customer insights and global brand partnerships.
Régis Schultz, Group CEO of JD Sports Fashion, described the appointments as “an important step in the next phase of JD’s growth.” He praised both leaders as “outstanding… well-tenured within our business, bringing extensive experience and deep knowledge of the markets we operate in,” and said they would play a critical role in delivering the strategy and driving sustainable growth. Schultz also thanked Hall “for his remarkable contribution,” noting that Hall began his career on the shop floor at Nordstrom and played a key role in evolving JD’s North American business before becoming CEO in 2023.
The changes come at a pivotal moment. JD, like many global sportswear retailers, has been exposed to a more cautious US consumer and a less predictable cadence of marquee product drops. Installing a leader with deep North American roots to run the JD fascia, while centralising marketing under a long-serving insider, is intended to sharpen execution on both sides of the Atlantic.
For suppliers and brand partners, the message is one of continuity paired with renewed focus: JD remains committed to the premium sneaker and lifestyle positioning that has defined it, even as it works through a softer patch in demand.
