Birkenstock Opens Its 24th U.S. Store in Malibu, Deepening Its Retail Footprint

Birkenstock has planted its flag on one of California’s most storied stretches of coastline. The 252-year-old German brand has opened a new company-operated store in Malibu, its third location in California and its 24th in the United States — a move that underscores how seriously the once-resolutely-wholesale brand now takes direct-to-consumer retail.

The store sits at Cross Creek Ranch, a new retail and dining destination in the Malibu Civic Center, the town’s central downtown district. It is a setting that fits Birkenstock’s aesthetic almost too neatly.

A store built for its setting

True to the coastal location, the shop is light and airy, with natural materials such as cork and leather woven throughout an uncluttered interior. At its centre sits a large abstract sculpture by local artist Rogan Gregory — a nod to the community as much as to the brand’s design language.

The assortment spans the brand’s women’s, men’s and kids’ sandals, clogs, sneakers, shoes and boots, along with the Birkenstock Care Essentials collection of foot and body care products, including a new plant-based nail polish line. It is a full expression of the brand’s widening lifestyle footprint, not merely a shoe shop.

A natural homecoming

Malibu is more than a prestige postal code for Birkenstock. “For decades, Birkenstock has had a strong community of fans in Malibu so bringing a store to life in the area felt very natural,” said David Kahan, president of Birkenstock Americas. He credited the “thoughtful approach to design, landscape, and community at Cross Creek Ranch” with reflecting the values the brand holds — making it, in his words, “the perfect place to bring a distinctive Birkenstock retail experience to life.”

There is history here, too. Birkenstock famously gained its first real foothold in the United States in California, so returning to the Golden State’s most cinematic coastline carries a symmetry the brand is happy to lean into.

The bigger retail strategy

Birkenstock’s march into owned retail is one of the more notable strategic shifts in premium footwear. Long defined by its wholesaler relationships and its cult comfort sandal, the company has spent recent years building a controlled, brand-defining store estate — the kind of space that tells the story on its own terms, free from the compromises of third-party shelves.

For a brand that went public and now faces the expectations of public markets, company-operated stores do double duty: they protect margin and they protect the brand. A well-designed shop reinforces premium positioning, gathers first-party customer data, and creates an experience that e-commerce cannot replicate.

With 24 U.S. doors and counting, Birkenstock is signalling that its retail expansion is far from finished. Malibu may be among the most photogenic of its locations, but it is best read as one more brick in a deliberate, global DTC strategy — one coastal California community at a time.
