Pajar Canada to Handle US Distribution of Melissa Footwear as Brazilian Brand Pushes North
Pajar Canada, the Quebec-based footwear group that owns the Pajar, Kodiak and Sorrento brands, has been appointed as the exclusive US distribution partner for Melissa, the Brazilian footwear and accessories brand. The agreement, which takes effect immediately, covers the full Melissa range of jelly shoes, sandals, boots, heels and small leather goods, and gives Pajar responsibility for sales, marketing, logistics and customer service across the United States, while Melissa’s existing US wholesale accounts transfer to Pajar.
The appointment is the most significant step in Melissa’s longer-term strategy to build a substantial North American business. The brand, founded in 1979 in Rio de Janeiro, has been a cultural phenomenon in Brazil for decades and has built meaningful businesses in more than 80 countries around the world, but its US presence has, until now, been a patchwork of independent distributors, sporadic retail partnerships and a relatively small direct-to-consumer operation. The brand’s signature jelly shoes, in particular, have been a familiar sight on US shelves for years but have never had the kind of dedicated, well-resourced distribution that would allow the brand to scale.
Pajar Canada, in turn, has spent the past decade building itself into one of the most capable footwear distribution platforms in North America. The group, founded in 1963, has historically been best known for its heritage winter boots, but a series of acquisitions and partnerships over the past ten years has transformed it into a multi-brand operator. In addition to its own brands, Pajar distributes a curated portfolio of international footwear labels in both Canada and the United States, including several European and South American brands that have been seeking a more reliable North American presence than they could build on their own.
The combination is, on paper, an attractive one. Melissa brings a distinctive product line, a strong brand identity, an active celebrity and influencer programme and a manufacturing base in Brazil that gives the company a meaningful cost advantage. Pajar brings a deep North American distribution network, well-established relationships with the major US specialty and department store chains, a sophisticated logistics platform, and a track record of building international brands in the US market. The partnership is structured to allow both companies to focus on what they do best.
For Pajar, the deal is also a deliberate strategic move into the women’s fashion footwear and accessories category. The group’s existing portfolio has been heavily concentrated in men’s and women’s outdoor, winter and casual product. The Melissa brand, with its bright colours, its jelly material technology, its design collaborations and its very different customer demographic, gives Pajar a foothold in a category it has not previously served. The company is understood to be evaluating additional brand partnerships in the broader women’s fashion footwear space.
For Melissa, the US market is the largest single prize in its global expansion strategy. The brand has identified the United States, together with Western Europe, as the two regions in which it can most credibly build a third major market alongside its home Brazilian business and its established European business. The US partnership with Pajar is the first of what is expected to be a series of significant investments in the US market, including a possible directly operated flagship store in a major US city, an expanded celebrity and influencer marketing programme, and a more active presence at US trade shows.
The transition will not be without friction. Several of Melissa’s existing US wholesale accounts are known to be concerned about the implications of the change, and the company has signalled that it will work closely with Pajar to ensure continuity of supply, customer service and brand experience during the transition. There will also be operational challenges, including the integration of Melissa’s US-based customer service, returns processing and marketing functions into Pajar’s existing platform.
If the partnership works, the US business has the potential to grow several-fold over the next three to five years. The jelly shoe category in the United States is, by the standards of the broader women’s footwear market, small but rapidly growing, and Melissa is the only brand with both the manufacturing base and the brand equity to capitalise on that growth. The partnership with Pajar gives the company the distribution muscle to do so. The next 12 to 24 months will be the period in which the success or otherwise of the partnership will become clear.
