Madrid UNIC and Assomac Showcase Italian Leather to Spanish Fashion Brands at Joint Event

UNIC, the Italian Tanners’ Association, and Assomac, the Italian Association of Footwear, Leather Goods and Tanning Machinery Manufacturers, staged a joint promotional event in Madrid earlier this month to introduce Italian leather and Italian footwear manufacturing technology to a curated group of Spanish fashion brands, manufacturers and industry observers. The event, held at the Italian Cultural Institute in the Spanish capital, was the first large-scale joint promotion the two associations have organised in the Iberian market and reflected a shared recognition that the Spanish fashion and leather goods industry is one of the most dynamic in Europe.

The Madrid event brought together more than 120 attendees, including representatives of Spanish fashion houses, footwear manufacturers, leather goods producers, technical institutes and trade press. The programme combined a presentation of the latest trends in Italian leather, a demonstration of the most recent Italian tanning and finishing machinery, and a structured networking session designed to facilitate direct contact between Italian suppliers and Spanish customers. The mood, by all accounts, was constructive and commercially focused.

For UNIC, the Spanish market is one of the most important in Europe. Spain has a substantial domestic leather and footwear industry, with several world-class brands and manufacturers, and a fashion consumer that is, in many segments, more closely aligned with Italian taste than with any other. Spanish footwear, in particular, has been a global success story over the past two decades, with the country’s manufacturers carving out a strong position in the comfort, casual and technical segments. Spanish leather goods, while less internationally recognised than its footwear counterpart, has also been growing, with several Spanish brands building meaningful businesses in both the domestic and export markets.

Italian leather has, for many of these Spanish companies, long been the raw material of choice. Italian tanneries produce the high-quality, design-led, technically innovative leathers that Spanish footwear and leather goods manufacturers need to compete at the higher end of the market. The relationship is well established and has generated substantial bilateral trade for many years. The Madrid event was, in part, a renewal of that relationship in a more structured, more visible format.

For Assomac, the Spanish market is the natural next step in an export promotion strategy that has, in recent years, been focused primarily on the larger Asian markets. Spanish footwear manufacturers are, by global standards, sophisticated buyers of manufacturing technology, and the country has been a reliable market for Italian tanning and finishing machinery for many years. The joint UNIC-Assomac event in Madrid gave Italian machinery manufacturers a high-quality platform to engage with the leading Spanish buyers.

The event also reflected a broader shift in the Italian leather and footwear supply chain’s approach to international promotion. For many years, Italian industry promotion abroad was carried out through a patchwork of individual company efforts, supported by the Italian Trade Agency and by the various industry associations. The current UNIC and Assomac leadership has been moving towards a more consolidated, more strategically targeted approach, in which the associations identify priority markets, organise larger and more visible events, and use those events to support the export efforts of their member companies. Madrid was one of the first manifestations of that strategy in 2026, and the intention is to stage similar events in additional priority markets over the coming year.

The presentations at the Madrid event covered a wide range of topics. UNIC’s leather trends presentation showcased the latest developments in sustainable tanning, in vegetable-tanned leather, in high-performance technical leather for the automotive and aviation sectors, and in the increasingly important area of leather traceability and certification. Assomac’s machinery presentation covered the latest developments in automated cutting, in digital finishing, in environmentally efficient finishing techniques, and in the application of artificial intelligence to quality control in the finishing process.

The Spanish response, as reported by the organisers, was enthusiastic. Several of the Spanish fashion houses in attendance expressed interest in developing deeper relationships with specific Italian tanneries, and a number of the machinery demonstrations generated specific commercial inquiries. The Spanish trade press gave the event substantial coverage, with several leading fashion industry publications highlighting the strength of the Italian offering and the opportunity for deeper collaboration between the two countries’ leather and footwear industries.

The broader significance of the Madrid event is that it represents a model for industry-to-industry cooperation that could usefully be replicated in other markets. The combination of a strong raw material offering (UNIC’s leather) and a strong technology offering (Assomac’s machinery), presented jointly to a sophisticated buyer base, allows both Italian industries to leverage each other’s strengths in a way that neither could achieve alone. For the Spanish industry, the event was a useful reminder of the depth and the quality of the Italian supply chain. For the Italian associations, it was a useful proof point of the new joint promotion strategy. Both sides left Madrid with the sense that the next step should be a return visit to Italy by a Spanish delegation in the autumn.
