Genesco Taps Former Foot Locker Exec Tomas Petersson to Lead Schuh
Genesco, the U.S.-based footwear retailer, has appointed Tomas Petersson as president of its UK business, Schuh, replacing Colin Temple, who is retiring after 38 years with the company. The handover is more than a routine executive change; it is a signal of how seriously Genesco is taking the youth-focused, culture-driven side of its portfolio at a moment when sneaker retail is being rewritten.
Petersson arrives with a résumé built specifically for this brief. He brings extensive leadership experience in multi-branded footwear retail with a focus on youth culture — precisely the demographic Schuh has always courted. Most recently he served as Foot Locker’s Senior Vice President and General Manager for the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), and before that as the company’s Global General Manager of atmos, its premium sneaker business. Earlier senior roles at Foot Locker, INTERSPORT and Puma round out a career spent at the intersection of sport, streetwear and retail scale.
The transition is designed to be seamless. Over the coming months, Petersson will work closely with Temple to ensure continuity for Schuh’s employees, partners and customers. That overlap matters: Temple is not just a long-serving executive but the architect of much of Schuh’s distinctive identity, and a clean handover protects the cultural equity he built.
Petersson struck an appreciative, forward-looking tone. “I am honored to join schuh and the Genesco family at such an exciting time,” he said. “Colin and the team have built an outstanding business with a unique culture, exceptional people and strong brand partnerships. I look forward to building on that foundation, accelerating growth, strengthening our footwear strategy, and delivering an even better experience for our customers, colleagues and brand partners.”
The appointment sits inside a broader reorganisation at Genesco. Andy Gray, CEO of Journeys’ Global Retail Group, noted that Petersson’s international experience and proven ability to grow retail businesses make him the right leader to build on the company’s current momentum. That group unites U.S. retailer Journeys, Schuh and Canada’s Little Burgundy under a single leadership structure, consolidating Genesco’s youth-focused footwear businesses into one coordinated engine.
Gray also thanked Temple for his “extraordinary contributions” across four decades, noting that he leaves behind a strong team, a distinctive brand and a business well positioned for continued success. Retirements of that length are rare in modern retail, and the tribute underlines how central Temple was to Schuh’s standing as one of the UK’s most recognisable youth footwear destinations.
For the wider footwear retail landscape, the move is a small but telling data point. As sneaker demand normalises after years of volatility, the retailers winning are those that combine brand partnership strength with genuine cultural credibility — not just shelf space. Petersson’s background at atmos and Foot Locker EMEA suggests Genesco is betting on exactly that blend: premium sneaker know-how fused with Schuh’s local UK heritage.
The challenge ahead is real. UK footwear retail faces pressured consumer spending, intense competition from both pure-play online players and global sportswear brands’ own stores, and the constant churn of sneaker trends. Petersson’s task is to accelerate growth without eroding the culture that made Schuh distinctive — a balance that favours an insider who understands both global scale and local nuance.
If the transition goes as planned, Genesco will have both preserved Temple’s legacy and injected fresh international momentum into its UK flagship. In youth footwear, continuity and reinvention are not opposites; the best operators manage to deliver both at once. Petersson now gets the chance to prove he can.
