Clarks Accelerates European Expansion with 15-20 New Stores Planned for 2026

Clarks, the British footwear heritage brand, is embarking on an aggressive European retail expansion. Following the opening of a new store at the Santangelo Outlet Village in Italy, the company has announced plans to open between 15 and 20 new stores across Europe this year, targeting France, Belgium, and the UK. The expansion also includes at least 120 new wholesale points of sale across the continent.

The move signals confidence in both the European consumer market and the Clarks brand at a time when many footwear retailers are retrenching. Joe Ulloa, the brand’s president for the UK and Europe, framed Italy as a priority market. “Italy is one of our most important European markets, with a strong historical connection to the brand and significant future opportunities,” he said. The new Italian store opening suggests that Clarks sees physical retail as a growth channel, not just a legacy format to be maintained.

The expansion strategy goes beyond simply opening new stores. Clarks is also reorganizing its approach to the Spanish market. Following previous store openings in Barcelona and Bilbao, the company will now manage Spanish operations from a new team and showroom in Madrid. This centralization reflects a maturing approach to market management, where regional hubs replace ad hoc expansion.

Additionally, Clarks is developing its third-party marketplace channel and has launched its own marketplace in the UK featuring over 60 complementary brands. This is a notable strategic move. By creating a curated marketplace, Clarks is positioning itself as a retail destination rather than just a single-brand store. The inclusion of complementary brands could drive footfall and increase average transaction values, while also giving Clarks access to data on consumer preferences across a broader product range.

“Across Europe, we are investing in the right stores, strengthening our wholesale operations, building new partnerships, and enhancing the value we offer to customers,” Ulloa summarized. The language is deliberate, emphasizing investment rather than retrenchment at a time when the European retail environment is widely described as challenging.

For the leather industry, Clarks’ expansion carries significance. As a heritage footwear brand, Clarks is a substantial consumer of leather, particularly for its classic designs. Expansion of its retail and wholesale footprint could support demand for leather footwear, particularly in the mid-market segment where Clarks operates. The brand’s commitment to physical retail also suggests confidence in the enduring appeal of try-before-you-buy footwear shopping, an experience that remains difficult to replicate online.

The expansion comes at a time when the European footwear market is showing mixed signals. Consumer demand is uneven across regions, with some markets stagnating while others grow. Clarks’ decision to invest aggressively suggests that the company sees opportunities in specific markets and channels that outweigh broader market weakness.

The strategy also reflects a shift in how heritage brands are approaching retail. Rather than relying solely on their own stores and e-commerce, brands like Clarks are building multi-channel ecosystems that include owned retail, wholesale partnerships, and marketplace platforms. This approach distributes risk and creates multiple touchpoints with consumers.

Clarks’ European push will be watched closely by competitors and suppliers alike. If the expansion delivers results, it could encourage other footwear brands to accelerate their own retail investments. If it falters, it will reinforce the caution that has characterized the sector in recent years. Either way, the decision to invest in physical retail at this moment in the market cycle is a bold one.
