Portuguese Footwear Steals the Show at Milan Fashion Week Through Designer Collaboration

Portuguese craftsmanship took center stage at Milan Fashion Week as London-based designer Saul Nash presented a reimagined boat shoe developed in partnership with TOWORKFOR, a Portuguese brand renowned for its professional and safety footwear. The collaboration, presented as part of Nash’s Spring/Summer 2027 STANCE collection at the historic Forza e Coraggio venue, underscores Portugal’s growing reputation as a manufacturing partner for international designers.

The shoe itself is a study in creative fusion. Nash, known for his aesthetic centered on movement and his ability to blend sportswear with tailoring, reinterpreted the classic boat shoe by combining a knitted and suede upper with a drawstring-inspired lacing system. The result is a model that bridges technical performance and luxury design, produced entirely in Portugal. For Nash, the decision to work with Portuguese manufacturers was immediate. “I am drawn to the quality and craftsmanship of Portuguese footwear,” he said. “I was genuinely surprised to realize that even work and safety shoes have hand-stitched seams along the vamp.”

The choice of TOWORKFOR as a partner is unconventional but strategic. The brand is best known for safety and protective footwear designed for demanding work environments. Nash saw an opportunity in that expertise: taking one of TOWORKFOR’s classic silhouettes and reinterpreting it with lightweight materials and a design language that embodies his brand’s DNA. “It was very stimulating to take one of its classic silhouettes and reinterpret it using lightweight materials and a design language that embodies our brand’s DNA,” Nash explained.

The collaboration was facilitated by APICCAPS, the Portuguese footwear industry association, as part of its mission to bring leading international designers together with Portuguese manufacturers. Cláudia Pinto, APICCAPS’ communications director, framed the initiative as part of a broader strategy. “These collaborations reflect our commitment to supporting designers by showcasing the excellence of our manufacturing capabilities, while highlighting the quality, versatility, and innovative capacity of the Portuguese footwear industry,” she said.

The materials used in the collection were developed as part of the BioShoes4All project, an initiative that reinforces the Portuguese footwear sector’s commitment to research, innovation, and sustainable solutions. This connection to sustainability research is significant, as international designers and brands increasingly demand materials that meet environmental as well as aesthetic and performance standards.

Portugal’s footwear industry has become a quiet powerhouse in European manufacturing. The sector exports over 90% of its production and is recognized internationally for its precision, innovation, and heritage of craftsmanship. While Italy and France dominate the luxury footwear narrative, Portugal has carved out a position as a preferred manufacturing partner for brands that value quality, flexibility, and competitive pricing.

The collaboration with Saul Nash illustrates how that positioning works in practice. A designer known for innovation and movement-based aesthetics chose Portuguese manufacturing not for cost savings but for quality and technical capability. The fact that a safety footwear brand could pivot to produce a luxury-influenced boat shoe demonstrates the versatility of Portugal’s manufacturing base.

For the leather industry, the collaboration is relevant because suede and leather are central to the design. The knitted and suede upper requires high-quality material, and the Portuguese supply chain’s ability to deliver that quality is part of what makes the collaboration viable. As designers increasingly seek manufacturers who can work with premium materials while maintaining sustainability credentials, the Portuguese leather and footwear ecosystem is well-positioned to benefit.

The Milan Fashion Week presentation is a reminder that in footwear, as in other luxury categories, the story behind the product matters. The combination of British design vision, Portuguese manufacturing expertise, and sustainable material innovation creates a narrative that resonates with both industry buyers and consumers.
