Gustavo Adrián Defeo Takes the Helm of European Leather Standards at a Pivotal Moment

After more than four decades in the leather industry, Gustavo Adrián Defeo FSLTC has been appointed Chairman of CEN Technical Committee (TC) 289 – Leather, the European committee responsible for developing and revising the leather standards that underpin an entire continent’s leather trade. The appointment, which took effect on June 9, 2026, following a vote by CEN national member bodies, runs through June 2032—a six-year term that will coincide with a period of extraordinary change for the industry.

For those who have followed Defeo’s career, the appointment is a recognition long in the making. A leather chemist by training, Defeo has spent more than 40 years navigating the intersection of research, testing, and standardization. He currently chairs several European and international leather testing groups, and his fingerprints are already on many of the standards that the industry relies upon today.

The timing of his chairmanship is noteworthy. The European leather industry is operating in an environment where regulation is expanding rapidly. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and an evolving landscape of chemical restrictions have all elevated the importance of standards that are technically sound, implementable, and internationally coherent. Defeo’s stated aim to modernize existing standards while strengthening cooperation with ISO comes at exactly the moment when the industry needs both continuity and renewal.

Leather standards might seem, from the outside, like a technical backwater—the sort of thing that only laboratory managers worry about. In practice, they are anything but. Standards determine what can be sold, how environmental performance is measured, what chemical residues are permissible, and how leather is defined in markets where alternative materials are aggressively contesting the terminology. A well-crafted standard protects legitimate leather producers; a poorly conceived one can become a trade barrier or, worse, a mechanism by which misleading claims prosper.

Defeo succeeds Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, whose own tenure was marked by steady progress in aligning European and international approaches. The transition from one Gustavo to another might seem seamless, but the context has shifted. The committee’s work now spans leather nomenclature (in an era when “leather” is being claimed by materials that contain no animal hide at all), testing methods that must account for new chemical formulations, and leather chemicals that are themselves evolving toward lower-impact profiles.

In a January/February 2026 article for International Leather Maker, Defeo addressed the communication of leather’s sustainability profile in the context of the EN 16848 standard. It is a theme that will likely occupy much of his chairmanship: how to ensure that standards reflect not just what leather is, but what it does—its durability, its repairability, its potential for circularity. As the European Commission continues to refine the Sustainable Products Initiative and the Ecodesign framework, the CEN TC 289 standards will be closely watched.

Defeo has also signaled an intent to expand collaboration on bio-based products and increase engagement with both industry and regulatory stakeholders. This is a welcome posture. Standards developed in isolation from the realities of tanneries and leather goods manufacturers can become unwieldy; standards developed without regulatory input can miss the policy direction entirely. A chairman who can bridge those communities is an asset to the entire value chain.

The leather industry has never been short of technical expertise. What it has sometimes lacked is a clear, unified voice in the standards bodies that increasingly shape market access. With Defeo at the helm of CEN TC 289 for the next six years, the industry has an experienced hand steering a process that will help determine whether European leather continues to set the global benchmark for quality and sustainability.
