Ownever Launches Leather Care Collection, Promoting Circular Fashion Through Repair and Maintenance
Sustainable and ethical luxury leather bag maker Ownever has launched a new leather care collection that extends the lifespan of leather items—regardless of the brand. The range includes specialised products for suede, smooth leather, and general leather care.
A Comprehensive Leather Care Range
The range includes: Suede renewer, which restores the colour and texture of suede and nubuck; Saddle soap, which provides gentle yet effective cleaning, removing dirt while protecting the leather’s integrity; leather polisher, which adds a natural shine and enhances the elegance of each piece, maintaining softness and comfort; and smooth leather cleaner, which offers efficient cleaning while protecting and softening smooth leather.
The new line is part of a broader programme that includes Ownever’s repair service. This initiative not only provides repair services for Ownever’s own bags but also for items from other brands.
“All Leather Items Have Stories to Tell”
“We have stories to tell,” says Eliana Barros, founder of Ownever. “With the right care, those stories can continue to be written, rather than discarded. This collection is about empowering anyone to extend the life of their leather items, whether they are from Ownever or another brand.”
The company said that the new collection “transforms the task of cleaning and caring for leather items into a true ritual. Whether it’s revitalising a bag that has accompanied countless adventures or restoring the shine of a pair of shoes that witnessed special moments, each product was created to help customers care for their items.”
Circular Fashion in Practice
Ownever’s approach aligns with the growing circular fashion movement, which emphasises longevity, repairability, and care over disposability. The fashion industry has faced mounting criticism for its environmental impact, with fast fashion being a particular target. Luxury brands, too, are under pressure to demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainability, beyond marketing slogans.
By offering care products and repair services that apply across brands, Ownever is making a subtle but radical statement: that the best way to be sustainable is to keep using what you already have. This message resonates with a growing segment of consumers who are questioning the logic of constant consumption.
The Bbusiness Case for Leather Care
Leather, when properly maintained, can last decades or even lifetimes. Yet, many consumers discard leather items not because they are worn out, but because they have lost their appearance or because a minor repair seems too troublesome. By making care and repair more accessible, Ownever is not only promoting sustainability but also building customer loyalty.
The products can be purchased at ownever.com, with prices starting at €29. For a leather bag that costs hundreds or thousands of euros, a €29 care product represents a modest investment with significant returns in terms of extended lifespan.
A Broader Industry Trend
Ownever is not alone in promoting leather care and repair. Several luxury brands have introduced care services in recent years, recognising that maintaining customer relationships beyond the initial purchase is both environmentally responsible and commercially smart.
Hermès, for example, has long offered repair services, reinforcing the perception of its products as heirlooms rather than fashion items. Other brands are following suit, albeit often with more limited scope. Ownever’s decision to care for items regardless of brand is a distinctive approach that could strengthen its reputation as a genuinely sustainability-driven company.
Changing the Narrative Around Leather Consumption
The launch of Ownever’s leather care collection comes at a time when the leather industry is navigating complex perceptions. Leather is sometimes criticised by environmental campaigners, yet it remains one of the most durable and repairable materials available. Initiatives like Ownever’s help to highlight leather’s positive attributes: longevity, repairability, and the potential for beautiful ageing.
By empowering consumers to care for their leather items, Ownever is contributing to a shift in narrative—from one of disposable fashion to one of cherished, long-lasting possessions. In an industry often accused of promoting overconsumption, this is a welcome counterpoint.
